(Bangkok, 4 December 2007) Asia Pacific Women Law and Development (APWLD), along with its networks in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean issued a statement on 30 November in solidarity with the people in Pakistan. The statement condemns the “the denigration of Constitutional democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms” by General Pervaiz Musharraf.
The “Statement of Solidarity with the People of Pakistan from the Women of Asia Pacific, Latin America and Africa” also points out that “women human rights defenders have been subject to harassment and abuse, arbitrarily arrested and detained, and we continue to be concerned for their safety and security”.
The statement is issued by APWLD, Women in Development Africa (WiLDAF) and Comite de America Latina y el Caribe para la Defensa de los Derechos de la Mujer (CLADEM), as they gathered in Bangkok for their 20th Anniversary of the Women, Law and Development (WLD) Networks.
The three organisations call upon the UN, the international community, governments and non-governmental agencies to take action to pressure General Musharraf to resign the presidency and to restore democracy, ensuring the independence of the judiciary and the freedom of expression.
The three organisations also issued a statement of solidarity with the women in Sudan, who “confront a range of political, social and economic crises”.
