Stay-behind Children in Myanmar, Indonesia and the Philippines: Implementing ASEAN Declaration on the Protection of Children in the Context of Migration

Migration trends have been on the rise, particularly in Southeast Asia. For the children of these migrants who remain in the countries of origin, school and health outcomes rely on the psychological support rendered by those who assume the child-rearing responsibilities

‘Stay-behind Children in Myanmar, Indonesia and the Philippines: Implementing ASEAN Declaration on the Protection of Children in the Context of Migration’ aims to shed a light on the under-researched role that governmental agencies play in ensuring the protection of stay-behind children’s rights.

Organised by the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA), the Human Rights Working Group (HRWG) and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, this online policy dialogue and book launch aims to:

• Share findings on the research conducted on stay-behind children in Myanmar, Indonesia and the Philippines;
• Discuss how to concretise the implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Rights of Children in the Context of Migration.

Moderated by Rafendi Djamin, Senior Advisor of HRWG.

Using a human rights perspective, this research looks at the effects of parental migration on the children who stay behind and the policies, as well as the implementation of such policies by respective governmental agencies, put in place to address this issue.
