The Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA), together with its Mongolian members Center for Human Rights and Development (CHRD) and Globe International, is organising from 14-16 September 2016 a 3-day training and strategies meeting for human rights defenders (HRDs) in Mongolia. During these three days, around 30 HRDs will gather from provincial and local levels, as well as 20 HRDs from the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar. While the first one and half days will focus on empowering HRDs from rural areas, herders and small scale artisanal miners, during the last sessions participants will discuss strategies and action plans to move forward the establishment of a national HRD network. This mission is a follow-up to the first National HRDs Consultation on Protection Mechanisms, which took place on 20-21 August 2015 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
While in Ulaanbaatar, FORUM-ASIA, as the Secretariat of the Asian NGO Network on National Human Rights Institutions (ANNI), will also have the opportunity to get key updates from the participants on issues related to the Mongolian National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), as well as build understanding of the NHRC key role in promoting and protecting human rights within the country. ANNI representatives will also pay a visit to the NHRC and other key government stakeholders, and advocate for efforts to strengthen the work of the NHRC. The mission will also provide a platform to introduce the work of ANNI in Mongolia.
