Over 150 civil society organisations worldwide have launched a campaign on 13 February 2009, to collect 888,888 signatures before 24 May 2009, the supposed release date of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.
Through this petition, the organisations call on the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to make it his priority to release all political prisoners in Burma, as a crucial step to "national reconciliation and democratisation in the country". Reportedly, over 2,100 political prisoners remain imprisoned today in Burma.
The target symbolises the day, 8 August 1988, when the Burmese junta killed 3,000 protesters in the country. To read the complete press release, please click here (.pdf).
