DHAKA: On 17 May 2009, Neeti
Gobeshona Kendra, a non-government organisation, urged the foreign minister,
Dipu Moni, to focus on the Rohingya crisis during her visit to Myanmer.

Speaking at the Chittagong Press Club on the same day, Mahabubul Hoque Ripon,
director of the Kendra, termed the Rohingya refugee issue the most important
for the bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and Myanmer.

He said nearly 28,000 registered Rogingya refuges were living at two camps, run
by the UNHCR but thousands of unregistered Rogingyas were roaming around the
Cox's Bazar and Chittagong Hill Tracts region.

"As an over-populated country, Bangladesh cannot bear the burden of such a
large number of refugees", he added and urged the foreign minister to put
pressure on the Myanmar government to resolve the issue. The crisis has
deepened because of the influx of Rohingya refugees along the areas bordering
Myanmer, Ripon said.
