Today is the second and last day of the 5th General Assembly (GA) of FORUM-ASIA in Bangkok. The GA will be expected to review and map out the organisation’s direction for the next few years. FORUM-ASIA will also be holding the 2nd Regional Asian Human Rights Defenders’ Forum from 28-29 November. As part of this Forum, the first international Women Human Rights Defenders’ Day will be launched on the 29th, co-organised by the Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development. Later that day, prominent human rights activist and lawyer Hina Jilani will be speaking at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT), Bangkok, at a panel night jointly organised by the FCCT and FORUM-ASIA.Today is the second and last day of the 5th General Assembly (GA) of FORUM-ASIA in Bangkok. Representatives from all FORUM-ASIA member organisations are attending this meeting, where there will be an election of the Executive Committee members and Chairperson of the Executive Committee. The GA will be expected to review and map out the organisation’s direction for the next few years.

Following this, FORUM-ASIA will be holding the 2nd Regional Asian Human Rights Defenders’ Forum from 28-29 November. This will take place at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok, in the headquarters of the UN Economic and Social Council in the Asia and Pacific Region.

The second day of the Forum will see the launch of the first international Women Human Rights Defenders’ Day, co-organised by the Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development.

Also on 29 November, prominent human rights activist and lawyer Hina Jilani will be speaking at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT), Bangkok, at a panel night jointly organised by the FCCT and FORUM-ASIA.

Ms Jilani is also the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on Human Rights Defenders. She and other noted human rights defenders will be speaking on “Defending Human Rights Defenders”, in light of many Asian countries failing to implement the Declaration on human rights defenders after it was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1998.
