Psychosocial Well-being for Human Rights Defenders
Those working to defend #humanrights are tackling some of the world’s most pressing issues. As a result, defenders face higher exposure to #stress and #trauma.
It is necessary for defenders and organisations to centre psychosocial well-being in their work. Safeguarding the well-being of defenders is critical for their health and imperative to build more resilient movements ‼️
HRDs are particularly exposed to a number of different stressors 😣 Unlike others, HRDs…will generally have a higher exposure to stress and trauma either directly or indirectly through, for example, the narratives we hear in our work, the violations we witness regularly and our interactions with the rights holders we support.
From 12 to 21 August, FORUM-ASIA will launch a series of posters to highlight the importance of well-being for human rights defenders, support they need, and what we and organisations can do more to ensure their well-being.

What is stress?
Although experiencing #stress is biological and innate, your response to stress is within your control. This is why knowing how to manage stress and #care for yourself is crucial ‼️
With that said, it is also important to note that stress affects more than you, as an individual. When you are stressed, it affects how you interact with others – including our families, friends, colleagues and the communities and defenders we work and engage with.
For this reason, it is crucial we pay attention to and address our own feelings, reactions, experiences, as well as find ways of dealing with them.

You may not always cognitively know the source of a trauma, but your body may remember experiencing it and therefore respond to the situation in a certain way to protect itself. It is therefore important to listen to your body and its needs.

What is Psychological First Aid?
Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a tool to provide immediate assistance to those who have experienced a crisis by giving them support to address their needs.
PFA is about connection, love, trust and empathy 🥰 towards what a person went through.
Though PFA cannot provide solutions to the problems people face, it is a tool used to empower people in need to help themselves ✊

We must ensure that guaranteeing the well-being of human rights defenders isn’t left solely to individuals, organisations must play a key role. Psychosocial well-being is an important part of what organisations should provide for all staff.
