Throughout 2017-2018, human rights defenders (HRDs) across Asia – including activists, journalists, non-governmental and civil society organisations, and advocates working in defence of human rights – continued to face severe threats and harassment for conducting their human rights work.
FORUM-ASIA’s report, Defending in Numbers: Resistance in the Face of Repression, analyses the 688 cases of violations it recorded over the last two years across 18 countries in Asia. The report highlights the key types of violations perpetrated against HRDs, the numbers of defenders affected, the groups of HRDs most targeted by violations, and the perpetrators most complicit in violations. Emblematic case studies that illustrate the impact these abuses have on the lives of defenders carrying out human rights work, are also featured.
On 31 May 2019, FORUM-ASIA will host a panel discussion where the key findings from the report will be discussed in conversation with human rights professionals who have worked extensively with defenders, and the HRDs themselves that have been at the receiving end of harassment and attacks. During this event, FORUM-ASIA will also share a first preview of its new database for documenting human rights violations against HRDs.
