1st International Women Human Rights Defenders Day in Asia to be commemorated in Bangkok

Women human rights defenders (HRDs) worldwide face intensifying threats, but there is also growing community resistance to these threats. Their stories and more will be shared at the 1st International Women Human Rights Defenders Day event held in Bangkok, Thailand on 29 November. This event also celebrates continued solidarity in the face of escalating human rights violations. Joining us on this occasion is Ms Hina Jilani, UN Special Representative of the Secretary General on Human Rights Defenders.Women human rights defenders (HRDs) worldwide face intensifying threats, but there is also growing community resistance to these threats. Their stories and more will be shared at the 1st International Women Human Rights Defenders Day event held in Bangkok, Thailand on 29 November.

This event is a gathering of women HRDs from Asia to celebrate continuing solidarity in the face of increasing threats and escalating violations of human rights. Women from the region – who are working on various critical issues – will be sharing their stories and experiences. It will be an opportunity for human rights activists to affirm their commitment to the defence of women and solidarity with women HRDs.

Jointly organised by the Asian Pacific Forum for Women, Law and Development and FORUM-ASIA, this event will be attended by Ms Hina Jilani, UN Special Representative of the Secretary General on Human Rights Defenders, as well as a number of women HRDs from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

This event will be part of global activities that will be held on 29 November to celebrate the first-ever International Women Human Rights Defenders Day. It will also be part of the 2nd Asian Human Rights Defenders Forum that will be held in Bangkok from 28-29 November 2006.
