The Diplomacy Training Program (DTP) course for human rights defenders
gives participants solid foundation knowledge of international human
rights framework and the UN system. It will be held in Wellington, New
Zealand, from 29 October to 16 November 2007.
Call for Applicants: Diplomacy Training Program, 17th Annual Human Rights and People’s Diplomacy Training for Human Rights Defenders

This annual comprehensive human rights and advocacy training course is the oldest established program in the region. It will take place from 29 October to 16 November 2007 in Wellington, New Zealand. It provides participants with a solid foundation of knowledge of the international human rights framework and the UN system. The course includes sessions on economic, social and cultural rights; civil and political rights; human rights based approach to development; strategic advocacy; media and video skills; internet research and advocacy; an introduction to human rights fact-finding and investigation; corporate accountability and human rights; and the environment and human rights. It will also explore some of the human rights challenges associated with globalization.

The course is particularly for people from Asia/Pacific countries who work in non-government and community based organizations. It is for individuals and organizations committed to protecting and promoting values of human dignity and interested in learning more about how to use international human rights standards and mechanisms in their work.

Basic Criteria

Priority in selection goes to active human rights defenders in the Asia/Pacific region and Indigenous people.

Other information and Details

Participants are expected to raise their own funds to meet the costs of travel and participation. DTP encourages participants to approach funding organisations to sponsor their course fee and travel expenses as DTP recognizes that in most cases individuals do not have the funds available to cover these expenses. There may be some subsidised spaces available. Where funding support is not available, DTP provides advice to participants on possible sources of funds to meet the costs of travel and training fees.
