FORUM-ASIA is delighted to present the 2023 ASEAN Human Rights Advocacy Academy, an empowering platform crafted to equip participants with knowledge and skills in ASEAN advocacy and human rights mechanisms. As a leading organisation focused on safeguarding fundamental freedoms and human rights defenders, FORUM-ASIA has been actively engaged in shaping the ASEAN Human Rights Mechanisms. Through workshops, training, and consultations, we aim to bolster civil society participation and hold ASEAN and its member states accountable to international human rights standards.

The forthcoming Academy aims to address the pressing need for ASEAN reform and amplify the voices of civil society, journalists, and youth activists in promoting and protecting human rights within the region. By taking part in this hybrid (online and offline) programme, you will engage in dynamic discussions on emerging issues that call for regional solidarity. The Academy will provide you with essential tools and insights to navigate the intricate landscape of ASEAN, fostering effective dialogue and engagement with its mechanisms.

Join us in honing your expertise, expanding your knowledge, and forging lasting connections with like-minded individuals. Together, we will enhance the accountability, independence, and protection of ASEAN human rights mechanisms. Apply now to make a tangible impact in advancing human rights in Southeast Asia and Timor Leste. Let your voice be heard and contribute to FORUM-ASIA’s ongoing endeavours in promoting a just and rights-based society.

Events:

The first part of the program will be conducted online, consisting of four interactive sessions held over a two-week period in June 2023. Participants will engage in discussions on topics such as the ASEAN human rights situation, the ASEAN human rights framework, best practices in human rights mechanisms, and effective advocacy strategies. To ensure an engaging online experience, platforms like Mural or Google Classrooms will be utilized.

During the second part of the Academy, which will take place in the 1st-2nd week of July 2023 in Jakarta, Indonesia, participants can engage in offline activities and field visits. They will meet with AICHR representatives, experts, and relevant stakeholders at the ASEAN headquarters, gaining firsthand insights into the workings of ASEAN and its human rights mechanisms. These meetings will provide a platform for participants to deepen their understanding further and apply the knowledge gained during the online sessions.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • We are seeking applications from young participants who hold Southeast Asian and Timor Leste nationality and are in the early to middle stages of their careers. Ideal candidates will actively promote social justice, human rights, peace and conflict, and democracy within Southeast Asia, at the local, national, or regional level.
  • We strongly encourage applications from all qualified individuals, regardless of their age, race, colour, SOGIESC (sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, and sex characteristics), religion, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
  • Priority consideration will be given to Southeast Asian and Timorese nationals who are currently based in Asia. We recognize the unique perspectives and valuable insights they bring to the table as individuals closely connected to the region.
