Asian NGOs Condemn Police brutality and the Raid on NGOs’ Offices in South Korea

Open letter!

FORUM-ASIA has issued an open letter to the South Korean President, condemning the police brutality and raid on NGO offices in Seoul. The police action occurred following a series of demonstrations by civil society groups to protest the import of US beef which they say would be harmful to public health. The Seoul government has warned of tougher treatments against the protestors but FORUM-ASIA reminded the President that South Korea is a signatory to various International conventions that supports freedom of expression and assembly.

FORUM-ASIA has issued an open letter to the Prime Minister of Mongolia, urging the government to end the current state of emergency, refrain from any use of violence and torture against detainees, allow them legal representation and let the media operate freely to promote free access to information and no cover up in the handling of detainees involved in the recent demonstration. Jointly published by Informal Sector Service Centre and Advocacy Forum, the report details the persistence of human rights violations against human rights defenders.

NGOs in Nepal urge government to accede to Rome Statute

They have launched a month long campaign on the ratification of the statute and to hold the authorities accountable for its human rights record, including its international commitments and obligations.

FORUM-ASIA urges Philippine government to investigate attack against Commission staff

Staff of the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines (CHRP) and a member of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) were recently attacked while they were on mission in the island of Limaong, Zamboanga City to investige the murder case of Madal Barorong, a human rights activist. FORUM-ASIA has communicated with the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders on this case and urges the government to conduct a thorough investigation of this incident.
 
Civil society reject the use of armed forces to repress public rallies

say_no_to_army.jpgTwenty seven Malaysian civil society organisations, including FORUM-ASIA member, SUARAM, has urged Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi to immediately assure the public that the army would not be deployed in civilian matters.

FORUM-ASIA has also issued an open letter to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to reject the deployment of armed forces to handle civilian matters and respect the fundamental rights to freedom of assembly. Read the letter here.

 

 
Human rights NGO disturbed by released of perpetrators of crimes against humanity in Timor Leste

timor_leste.jpgFORUM-ASIA member in Timor Leste, the Judicial System Monitoring Programme (JSMP) has expressed its concern that perpetrators of crimes against humanity are being released or granted clemency.

The human rights NGO has questioned the government on its liberal treatment of those released, as it should not disregard the rule of law although the country is in the process of moving away from its legacy of violence.
