VIETNAM - Now convicted: A lawyer defending bloggers

seapa_logo.jpgThe Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) condemns in the strongest possible terms the conviction on 20 January 2010 of Vietnamese lawyer Le Cong Dinh, and expresses grave concern over its implications to the overall human rights and free expression environment in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Lawyer Le Cong Dinh, after a one-day trial in Hanoi, was convicted of subversion and meted a prison term of five years.

th_deportation_jan2010_nation.jpgThe Mekong Migration Network (MMN), a network of 35 civil society organizations in the countries of the Mekong Greater Sub-Region, strongly opposes the recent deportation of Cambodian beggars without due process and calls on the Royal Thai Government to ensure that effective and appropriate screening processes are immediately put in place to prevent the deportation of migrants who have the right to protection.

Mongolia establishes moratorium on executions of death penalty

Mongolia's president Elbegdorj Tsakhia imposed a moratorium on the death penalty on 14 January 2010. Human rights organisations welcomed this remark, as a step toward abolishment of executions.

mn_upr2010.jpgFORUM-ASIA and its two members, Centre for Human Rights and Development (CHRD) and Globe International (GI), organised Mongolian NGOs workshop on the Universal Periodic Review from 10-12 January 2010 in Ulaanbaatar. About 50 people from Mongolian NGOs with different backgrounds, including environment, human rights, child, labour, women, land rights, sexual minority, ethnic minority, participated in the event.

Dalit rights: Casting "untouchables" into discourse of Apartheid

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed an urgent need to end caste-based discrimination. In an interview with The Nation on 26 October 2009, Navi Pillay, a former judge in South Africa, mentioned the need to create a new international convention that includes the explicit recognition of caste-based discrimination as a human rights violation.
